Why Freedom

Why was a study like FREEDOM necessary?

FREEDOM represents the evolution of a previous study conducted by our research group (Deprair), which aimed to assess the impact of air pollution on the severity of Major Depressive Disorder and to explore the potential biological mechanisms underlying this relationship. With FREEDOM, we aim to investigate the role of green spaces in modulating the severity of mood disorders.

From a biological perspective, the study will also further examine the role of extracellular vesicles—small particles released into the bloodstream by various cell types, including neurons—which enable communication between distant organs.

The Aim of FREEDOM

The value of the Deprair study lies in its ability to integrate environmental, clinical, and mental health data to build a clear picture of the impact of air pollution on the human psyche. The findings raised awareness within the scientific community, highlighting the urgent need to identify potential protective factors and mitigation strategies.

It is precisely from this need that the FREEDOM project has taken shape: a natural continuation that does not seek to replace Deprair, but rather to complement it—broadening its scope and integrating new variables into the research process.

What Comes After FREEDOM?

Our research group intends to continue investigating the relationship between the natural environment and mental health over time. We began with Major Depression due to its high prevalence in the population and its significant impact on disability, but the relationship between the natural environment and other disorders—such as anxiety or schizophrenia—could also be explored further.

Research and Citizenship: Together for Mental Wellbeing

In addition, actions aimed at improving the mental health of the general population may be defined—for example, the inclusion of recreational green spaces in urban planning.
To this end, members of the research group are open to dialogue with citizens and institutions to develop new ideas for advancing research in this field and to explore potential practical applications.
